Dear Seekers of Truth,
The Word of God has a great impact on what you do. We learn by those who are commended and by those who ar not. Often we can learn what is best by bad examples.
Mat 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier [matters] of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
The Pharisees had a legalistic religion, instead of a personal relationship with God. Just as you are not forced to accept God, the concept of forcing God to do things is not a Biblical concept. If you truely love someone, you don't force them to do anything. Knowing God's intentions for us are good, we can trust him to let us know how to relate to him in the best way.
Mat 23:24 [Ye] blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
Mat 19:24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
Mar 10:25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
Luk 18:25 For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
The problem was not that they were not scholarly, but they interpreted scripture according to their own writings instead of reading what the Word of God says. They tried to enter through their own works.
Rom 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law [is] the knowledge of sin.
Gal 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
Their error was legalism. They circumvented what God intended by esteeming their own words about the Word of God. In doing so, they were far away from the truth, missing the basic concepts of the faith. They became experts at theological arguments, instead of knowing God. They were lifted up with pride.
