For the benefit of those who don't know Balboa Island. Balboa Island is where John Wayne used to live. He had a house with a private beach and a boat dock. The streets are named after gemstones, which is appropriate, because it costs a kings randsom to live there. Many of the houses don't seem too special, except for their location. I think John Wayne's house sold for around $5 million in the 70s.(perhaps worth around $25 million today?) A small cottage on Balboa island costs over a million today. It's a lovely place to stroll, especially during the Summer. It has nice shops with antiques, coffee shops and places to purchase chocholate dipped frozen bananas. It's a cool area with ocean breezes, a place for wealthy people to live.
The amusement area is called the Fun Zone, which is near the Ferry landing on the Peninsula near the island. It's part of an area called Newport Beach. Walter Martin used to teach in the area, but that was some years ago. It's not far from Corona Del Mar, Pirates Cove, where Calvary Chapel does baptisms in the ocean. Sometimes thousands go down for baptisms. Sometimes people go down there to see what the crowd is doing and end up accepting Jesus Christ and getting baptized there. There are people who do beach witnessing, especially up the coast in Huntington Beach. Some of the top surfers competing in the International Surf Competion in H.B. are brothers in the Lord.
Places you may have heard of not far from that area are Disneyland, TBN headquarters, the Crystal Cathedral, Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa(the original), and Saddleback Church. The fellowship where Chuck Swindoll pastors is near. Greg Laurie of Harvest Crusades lives in that general area. Chuck Smith of a Word for Today lives in Huntington Beach. Focus on the Family used to be in the area at one time, but moved to Colorado. Within two hours drive are fellowships associated with Jack Hayford and John MacArthur. Two hours to the South is the Institute for Creation Research.
Many of the bad things you have heard about California are true, but there are some nice fellowships to visit in case you want to see a favorite pastor live. There is a lot of darkness, but there is light too. I don't agree with all of the guys I've mentioned, but most have something to contribute. The body of Christ is diverse. When you consider God sent is Son to die for us, and that he would have that none would perish that all would come to repentance, the body contains many diverse people. It is well to listen to some on the radio, but there is something about attending live. In some places, the Holy Spirit can be felt to where physical presence is a true blessing.
